Termi 'townie' viittaa usein henkilöön, joka on syntynyt ja kasvanut tietyssä kaupungissa tai asuu siellä pysyvästi. Towniet voivat olla erityisen kiintyneitä omaan kaupunkiinsa ja sen kulttuuriin. Sana käytetään myös kuvaamaan ihmisiä, jotka ovat paikallisia verrattuna opiskelijoihin tai muualta tulleisiin asukkaisiin, erityisesti yliopistokaupungeissa.
