Se voi tarkoittaa sekä loogista että tieteellistä todistamista, jossa esitetään argumentteja tai kokeellisia havaintoja väitteen tueksi. Oikeudellisessa kontekstissa proof tarkoittaa todisteita, jotka esitetään oikeudenkäynnissä, jotta voidaan vahvistaa syyllisyys tai syyttömyys. Matematiikassa proof tarkoittaa muodollista todistusta, joka vahvistaa teoreeman tai laskentakaavan oikeellisuuden.
