Incumbent tarkoittaa henkilöä, joka tällä hetkellä pitää tiettyä virkaa tai asemaa, erityisesti poliittisessa kontekstissa. Termiä käytetään usein viitattaessa nykyiseen viranhaltijaan, joka on vastakkain vaaleissa tai muussa kilpailussa. Esimerkiksi, Yhdysvalloissa presidentinvaaleissa istuva presidentti on 'incumbent', ja hänellä voi olla etulyöntiasema, koska hänellä on jo kokemusta ja tunnettuutta. Incumbent-termin käyttö ei rajoitu vain politiikkaan, vaan se voi koskea myös muita aloja, kuten liiketoimintaa, jossa nykyinen johtaja tai hallituksen jäsen saattaa olla 'incumbent'.
