A dangerous rock on the Italian coast opposite the whirlpool Charybdis on the coast of Sicily. The passage between ''Scylla'' and ''Charybdis'' was formerly considered perilous; hence, the saying ''Scylla and Charybdis'' signifies a great peril on either hand.
