Abstraktio tarkoittaa prosessia, jossa otetaan huomioon vain oleelliset piirteet tai ominaisuudet ja jätetään huomiotta kaikki muu, mikä ei ole relevanttia. Tämä voi tapahtua taiteessa, matematiikassa, filosofiassa ja muilla aloilla. Abstrakti ajattelu on kyky käsitellä ideoita ja konsepteja ilman, että niitä sidotaan konkreettisiin esimerkkeihin. Taiteessa abstraktio voi ilmentyä muotojen, värejen ja komposition käytön kautta, jolloin teoksen sisältö tai merkitys ei ole suoraan nähtävissä vaan vaatii katsojalta tulkintaa.
